Ginger Remains to Be One of the Most Demanded Products

The global ginger market increased by a CAGR of 4.8% between 2017 and 2021, mainly because of its reputation as an immune-boosting food. As a result, the global COVID-19 pandemic is assumed to be behind this spike in interest for the spice.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Sparks Interest in Immune-Boosting Foods

Ginger is a wonder food. Dozens of claims surrounding its beneficial properties for health can be found online, in books, and in research papers. It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant meal that soothes nausea and muscle discomfort while also aiding digestion. Most significantly, it boosts the immune system, which can be especially appealing during a pandemic. While not all claims are accepted by the scientific community, it hasn’t stopped ginger from becoming a staple on grocery lists as consumers stock up on immune-boosting foods to ward off infectious diseases.

Brazil Gains a Foothold in the Ginger Market

The global pandemic is not the only factor fueling the demand for ginger. Importers are seeking ginger from different places. While China is generally the main player in terms of ginger exports, buyers are shifting away from China and choosing new places, such as Brazil, to source their ginger. In recent years, exports of ginger from Brazil to the US and Europe have grown exponentially.

Additionally, people are doing different things with ginger rather than just supplying it in its raw or dried form. Ginger juices have become popular over recent years, particularly small bottles of the juice mixed with other wonder fruits and vegetables known as “shots.” There are thus many opportunities emerging in the ginger market.

Finally, the skincare market is also helping to drive the demand for ginger, with the apparent free-radical protection offered by the spice, making it a popular ingredient for face products. In 2021, ginger skincare represented a beauty industry trend. This demand for ginger skincare products is further helping to grow the ginger market and will likely continue into the future.
