India's central role in vaccinating the globe

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted almost all industries and aspects, causing major economic and social disruptions. Fortunately, in recent months, things appear to be looking up, as multiple vaccines have been developed by pharma companies around the world. The next major challenge is to ensure that they are made available to all countries.

This is where countries like India play a huge role. The South Asian nation has robust manufacturing capabilities when it comes to the production of vaccines. A large number of countries are thus depending on the vaccines that India will produce over the coming months. This blog focuses on India's central role in vaccinating the world.

How India May Help Bring an End to the Pandemic

India is a well-known vaccine manufacturing hub. In fact, its vaccine production capabilities are not limited to COVID-19 vaccines. With the world’s largest national immunization program, the country is not new to large-scale vaccination campaigns and has already been producing vaccines for several diseases, from polio to rotavirus. It is also home to the Serum Institute of India, the largest vaccine manufacturing company in the world, which can produce millions of vaccines annually. This is the primary reason why AstraZeneca decided to team up with the firm.

There are several other vaccine manufacturers present in the country as well. These companies play a major role in ensuring that vaccines can be mass-produced and shipped to remote parts of the world. India has also worked towards improving its distribution mechanisms in recent years. These developments mean that the country is well-positioned to help eradicate this deadly disease. Moreover, under the global COVAX initiative, India has been donating vaccines to some of the poorer countries, making it a vital part of the global vaccine rollout.

However, in recent months, India has been caught off guard by the fast speed at which vaccines were approved for global use, the significant surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, and the scaling problems from its main vaccine producers. Thus, India’s previous goal to supply vaccines to 91 countries before the end of August is being crushed, as it struggles to vaccinate its own citizens first.
